The Coordinator General of Edo Civil Society Organisations, an umbrella body of civil rights groups in Edo state, has disclosed that, government at all levels have disappointed the citizens in the areas of protection of lives and property.
He stated this in the organisations’ monthly general assembly held recently in Benin City, the state capital.
Agho posited that amidst the huge amount of money collected as security votes year in, year out, citizens cannot sleep with both eyes closed owing to the incessant armed robberies, kidnappings and cults related violence which has refused to abate.
He went further to lambast the three ties governments for their failure to provide jobs and creating the eabling environment for small and medium scale industries to thrive, yet same governments will embark on the repatriation of citizens who were able to leave the country due to the directionless of government and poor economy.
He added that the reason politicians are hell bent on returning Nigerians in the Diaspora back to the country is a class struggle manifestation which is evident in same politicians sending their own wives and children abroad for better life.
Also speaking, Comrade Keshi Lawrence raised concerns over the heavily publicized ‘Operation Wabaizigan’ and the recently launched ‘Operation Puff Adder’ which are yet to manifest in reality as the security architecture of the state.
He advised that EDOCSO should mobilize its members at home and in the Diaspora for a massive demonstration against the high rate of insecurity in the state as soon as possible.
But Comrade Kelly Osunbor who was very angry with the activities of some police officers, expressed his disappointment over how police officers had left their core responsibilities for the state and citizens to be chasing after Internet fraudsters which do not portend immediate life threatening situations to the society like other violent crimes that citizens are faced with daily.
Osunbor said the chase of Internet fraudsters popularly known as ‘yahoo, yahoo boys’ is solely to collect money from them and not to prosecute same as enshrined in the law books.
He advised that any police officer that collects money from criminals should be made to go in for the offence committed by the suspected criminal.
Other comrades bore their minds on different aspects of the society centred on good governance, social justice and human rights.
The meeting was attended by members of affiliate organizations from the three senatorial districts in the state.
