For nearly one year running, intense pressure has continue to mount on a business mogul and highly respected politician, Capt. Dr. Hosa Okunbor to contest the 2020 governorship election in Edo state.
Dr. Hosa Okunbor is an oil magnet and one of the wealthiest men in the state whose influence cut across all spheres of life, especially in business and political affairs.
Although a staunch member of the ruling -All Progressive Congress (APC), Capt. Hosa is generally acceptable and respected by most politicians in the state who always extend hands of fellowship to him during elections.
A close confidant of Dr Okunbor who would not want his name in print hinted The Reliance in Benin City that his political friend for close to one year has been under great pressure to launch himself into the governorship race of the state.
“From APC members to the PDP and other political parties in the state, the appeal is the same. They want him (Capt Hosa) to become the governor of the state.
“Traditional rulers, individuals, groups and organizations have all sent separate messages to my political friend to accept the call on him to govern the state, politically.
“Those who know Capt Hosa will not be in doubt of his capability to deliver. He has been assured of support from all the local government areas and wards in the state. His influence and reach no doubt, cut across all the political parties.
“Let me tell you the truth, the very moment, Capt Hosa decide to heed the call of the well-meaning leaders to take up the governorship position of the state, then no other politician in the state can risk challenging him. Not even the incumbent governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki.
“Indeed, fear has gripped the state governor and others nursing gubernatorial ambitions over the possibility of capt. Hosa heeding the calls by Edo people to contest the governorship race.
“Information reaching us indicated that Governor Obaseki though grandstanding is sore afraid and in fact, those close to him have painted the picture of somebody in panic mode.
“But my friend (Capt. Hosa) has consistently and politely turned down the offer to become governor of the state. He confided in some of us that he was okay with his business and that he would not accept any elective or appointive position.
“He told us that if the pressure becomes unending, he may be forced to issue a press statement to clear the air and put the matter to rest. Dr Hosa Okunbor said he is satisfied with his kingmaker status in the state.
“It is a well known fact that there is hardly any politician seeking elective position in the state, particularly in Edo South Senatorial District who will not reach out to him for his assistance, “the source added.
