EDSG Prioritizes Revamping Public Schools – Commissioner

The Edo State Government has reiterated its commitment to revamping education standards by enhancing infrastructure and recruiting qualified teachers in public schools.

The Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy Iyamu, made this known during a media briefing in his office, emphasizing Governor Monday Okpebholo’s resolve to improve the state’s educational system.

He also stated that the administration is determined to raise educational standards in all aspects of education, address existing challenges, and position Edo as a model for public school management in Nigeria.

He underscored the importance of upgrading both personnel and infrastructure to align with global standards particularly in Artificial Intelligence.

“It is unacceptable to see students sitting on the bare floor due to a lack of chairs and tables. The ministry will prioritize infrastructural development to create a conducive learning environment for every Edo child,” he assured.

The commissioner also reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to recruiting qualified teachers, beginning with an initial phase of 500 educators. He noted that recruitment would continue in phases until public schools are fully staffed with competent teaching and non-teaching personnel.

To ensure transparency, Dr. Iyamu disclosed plans to conduct a biometric audit across all schools to eliminate ghost workers. “We will clean up the system, as some employees have retired or passed away. Fresh hands will be brought in to strengthen the workforce,” he stated.

Addressing concerns from the National Union of Teachers (NUT), he assured them that Governor Okpebholo is dedicated to ensuring adequate teacher availability.

Regarding the fate of “Star Teachers” engaged by the previous administration, Dr. Iyamu revealed that a review is underway as their contracts expire in March. He encouraged them to apply through the open recruitment portal, stating that qualified candidates would be considered for permanent employment.

Dr. Iyamu further disclosed plans to introduce skills acquisition training alongside academic learning. Students will be able to acquire vocational skills such as hairdressing and phone repairs, aimed at reducing unemployment among graduates.

“We are prioritizing vocational training and entrepreneurial skills to empower students. Graduates should not only leave school with certificates but also with practical skills to enhance their employability and entrepreneurship potential,” he emphasized.

Speaking on the EdoBEST programme, the commissioner affirmed the state’s commitment to integrating technology in education. “Our focus is on continuous improvement. We will assess existing programmes and enhance them where necessary to ensure that Edo children receive the best education possible,” he said.

Iyamu also stressed the need for collaboration with the Federal Government on policies that benefit the education sector.

On private schools, he announced an impending review and a meeting with school owners to ensure compliance with educational standards.

Adding that “Parents should prepare for a new dawn. There will be a complete overhaul of the system. Any substandard schools will be shut down, regardless of ownership. Upholding educational excellence is non-negotiable,”
