Edo Guber: ITV/Radio Organize Political Debate In Benin City

With the governorship election just 9 days away, the management of ITV Benin deemed it fitting to invite selected political actors to brief the public on how they plan to address critical issues in Edo State.

The deputy governor candidates from various political parties who participated in the debate included Philip Osagie from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Edith Isopkan from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Comrade Bello Aneru from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Yusuf Asamah Kadiri from the Labour Party (LP), and Sir Lord Osas Osunde from the African Action Congress (AAC).

Addressing the role of a deputy governor, Sir Lord Osas Osunde of the AAC stated that the deputy governor is essentially the governor’s assistant, tasked with ensuring the fulfillment of promises made to the people. He emphasized the importance of patience and adherence to instructions while addressing conflicts. Osunde proposed increasing the number of local government areas to 60 and supporting graduates with production machinery. He also highlighted plans to build infrastructure in each local government area to harness natural resources.

Philip Osagie of the ADC emphasized his role in supporting the governor to achieve set objectives. On conflict resolution, he stressed the importance of understanding and respect for the governor. Osagie proposed revitalizing rural areas, fostering industrialization, and providing security to encourage agricultural engagement.

Comrade Bello Aneru of the APGA assured that he would support his principal and represent him when necessary, as per the Nigerian Constitution. He mentioned that any disagreements would be resolved with loyalty to the governor and stressed the need to avoid conflicts that impede development. Aneru promised to revamp Edo State’s economy within 100 days and focus on agricultural development and infrastructure.

Yusuf Asamah Kadiri of the Labour Party described his role as supportive rather than leading, emphasizing collaboration and mutual understanding. Kadiri outlined plans for economic revitalization, job creation, and road construction. He also proposed setting up local vigilantes who are not involved in drugs or politics.

Edith Isopkan of the NNPP committed to efficient use of state resources and coordination of state departments. She promised to address the suffering of the people, engage citizens in government, and improve road connectivity and education. Isopkan also stressed the need for acceptable local security that protects rather than harasses the public.
