The Chief Judge of Edo State, Honourable Justice Daniel Okungbowa, has sworn in 100 worthy people recently appointed the Justices of Peace (JP).
The swearing in ceremony took place at the Ceremonial Court Hall of the state High Court complex along Sapele, Benin City.
Addressing the appointees, Justice Okungbowa who praised their distinguished careers and societal contributions, noted that “this appointment adds another glorious cap to your achievements, but remember it comes with enormous responsibilities.”
He emphasized that prior to their selection, they underwent rigorous scrutiny, character, and fitness tests, demonstrating their impeccable character.
Okungbowa advised the Justices of Peace to execute their duties responsibly, cited the Magistrate Courts Law, Cap 97, Volume IV, Laws of Defunct Bendel State of Nigeria (1976).
He clarified that they do not possess adjudicatory powers, but rather ensure peace and order in society.
The Chief Judge who cautioned against abusing their power, emphasized the risk of revocation and certificate withdrawal.
He, however encouraged the appointees to seek guidance from High Court Judges, Magistrates, or Area Customary Court Presidents.
A human rights activist, Comrade Dr. Oregbe Omorodion who was one of the appointees, expressed gratitude to everyone who made the appointment and ceremony possible.
He shared his philosophy about life, emphasizing the importance of loving one’s neighbours and doing good.
