Policemen from a Divisional Police Headquarters (name withheld) in the early hours of last Wednesday stormed a brothel in Benin City metropolis and forced open a room wherein a middle aged man (name withheld) was in the middle of ’emotional entanglement’ with a prostitute.

The police officers accused the young man of having sex during working hours. He was subsequently handcuffed and whisked away half naked to the Oba Market police station.

Further enquiry later revealed that the man, a distributor of Household Items, had gone out to distribute goods near the brothel when he decided to answer nature’s call.

But on getting to the station, he was allegedly forced to part with the sum of N12, 000 to secure his bail and because he was not with enough money at the station, some policemen had to follow him back to where he had packed his distribution van near the hotel to get the bail money.

The owner of the brothel however played a smart one when called the Coordinator General of Edo Civil Society Organisations, Comrade Omobude Agho who moved immediately to seek audience with the DPO. The DPO was said to have promptly summoned the police officers involved in the unlawful arrest and scolded them even as collected the bail money earlier paid and refunded the money to the suspect.

He further warned them against unprofessional conducts that could land them in serious trouble. The DPO also apologised to the suspect and thanked Comrade Omobude Agho for the maturity he exhibited in drawing his attention to it, stating that the incident that concerned policemen from Esigie Police Station where a young man was handcuffed to a van that flooded the social media was still fresh in their memory.

The DPO pleaded for mutual collaboration with the civil societies in ensuring that bad eggs in the police force are fished out and that the attainment of professional policing should be our collective responsibility.

The police officers concerned were asked to drop their guns and wait somewhere ostensibly for punishment for misconduct and unprofessionalism.
