But father of the victim, Pa. Ugbo Enabulele blamed the police for not acting early to protect his son who had allegedly informed the police that his life was under severe threat.

“Osamuyi had gone to the Evbuotobu Police Division to incident a case of threat to life and instead of the police to swing into action, they waited for my son to be killed before starting their useless investigation,” he disclosed

The visibly angry Enabulele told The Reliance in an interview that his son before his untimely death had informed the police that some strangers from Lagos were threatening his life over what he knew nothing about.

According to him, “he said about five persons including three young men and two elderly women for several days were pestering his life for allegedly sheltering one of their sons named Shola Akinyemi who they wanted dead or life for daring to convert from Islam to Christianity.

“My son told them that the said boy was not with him and that he had not set his eyes on him (Shola) for several years.

“When the pressure and threats were becoming unbearable, my son went to Evbuotubu Police Division to report the matter because the strangers had given him few days ultimatum to release their son so they could deal with him and that should my continue to refuse, they will kill him instead.

“His insistence that Shola was not with him fell into deaf ears. The police refused to act and on January 3, Osamuyi was murdered in cold blood

“Now that they have succeeded in killing him for what he knew nothing about, I want the police to get to the roots of the matter and bring the culprits to justice.

“It is true that my son and Shola were very good friends but for up to three or five years have not been seeing each other, yet his extended family people came all the way from Lagos to Benin City to kill him just like that. It’s painful”, he added.

When contacted for comment the spokesperson for Edo State Policed Command, DSP Peter Osani who confirmed the incident, said the police has launched a full scale investigations into the case.

“It is purely a murder case. It has religious undertone. The police is on top of the matter and we are working hand in hand with the Lagos State Police Command to enable us apprehend the killers who we suspected are residing in Lagos.

“To this end, the Edo State Police Command has declared one Shola Akinyemi wanted. We believe that he and some members of his family have questions to answer”, the PPRO stated.
