Stop The Killings By Herdsmen Now, EU Tells Buhari

 

The European Union (EU) has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently increase efforts to bring violent bloodshed by herdsmen to an end and also defend the right of Nigerians to worship freely.

EU also told the President Buhari to protect the rights of all their citizens in line with Nigeria’s laws and Constitution.
The call was contained in a resolution of the EU passed by its parliament on Thursday. It was brought pursuant to Rule 135 of the Rules of Procedure of the EU Parliament.

• The resolution, titled ‘European Parliament resolution on Nigeria (2018/2513(RSP)’, followed motions brought to the parliament by different groups seeking urgent intervention to end violent bloodshed by herdsmen across the country.

The parliament also urged President Buhari to “focus on upholding human rights and dignity in all policies to ensure peaceful coexistence among citizens irrespective of their religion, beliefs and political affiliations”.

While deploring “ongoing violence and attacks in northern Nigeria, whose targets have been Christian communities”, the EU urged “the Nigerian Government to negotiate a national policy framework that would protect the interests of both farmers and herders”.

It also urge President Buhari to address the root causes of the violence by ensuring equal rights for all citizens and non-discriminatory legislation, just as it lauded him for his efforts in addressing security challenge posed by Boko Haram terrorists.

The EU said it “strongly condemns the increase in violence against Christians and Muslims in Nigeria, including the targeting of religious institutions and worshippers, such as the recent killing of at least 48 Christians in villages across Plateau State and the bombing of a mosque in Mubi, northeast Nigeria, in which at least 50 people died”.
