Edo State University Uzairue, has added another feather to it’s cap with the establishment of the University’s radio FM station to be known as 90.5 Peak FM.
Vice Chancellor of the university, Eng. Prof. Emmanuel Aluyor, who disclosed the cheering news during the university’s 3rd convocation press briefing, said the university’s radio station has the capacity to cover the campus activities and its environs.
The VC said that as part of the convocation ceremony, the state governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki will commission some projects in the university, including campus FM radio station to be known as 90.5 Peak FM.
The VC listed some of the university’s achievements to include first in West Africa to adopt the CANVAS Learning Management System; first Medical Training Institution in Nigeria with an Anatomage Table; Ranked 4th best university in Nigeria by the Time Higher Education 2021 Impact ranking; establishment of a Molecular laboratory that can be used to test Covid-19 sample among others.
The Vice Chancellor stated that the vision of the state government for the university is to be a centre of excellence, noting that the vision is very much on course considering the achievements of the University in the last few years.
According to him, the university has remained in session and maintained a stable academic calendar since inception to graduate students as at when due not minding several challenges.
“Since its inception, the university has grown with an increase in the number of faculties, departments, approved and accredited programmes as well as students enrollment”.
He stated that as at today, the university has eight Faculties, including three faculties in the College of Medical Sciences, that is faculties of Basic Medical Sciences, Basic Clinical Sciences and Clinical Science while other five are faculties of Arts, Management and Social Sciences, Applied Health Science, Engineering, Law and science as against the background of two faculties at inception.
Prof. Aluyor further stated that all programmes across the eight faculties have approvals and accreditation by the National University Commission (NUC) while programmes that are professional such as Medicine, Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science, Engineering, Law, and Accounting have approval and earned full accreditation from the supervising bodies.
He revealed that the university has also commenced her postgraduate programmes leading to higher degree, having graduated two sets of undergraduates and received approval from NUC after a verification visit, adding that the first set of graduate will be convocating on Thursday 4th, November, 2021 while the university has also mounted a conversion programme for graduates of polytechnics and monotechnics who are desirous of a bachelor’s degree.
On student population, he disclosed that since inception in 2015/2016 academic session, the NUC approved the quota of 500 for admission into the university but was later increased to 1,800.
Prof. Aluyor also stated that the convocation lecture titled “The Role of African Universities In The Development of African States” will be delivered by the President of the Association of African Universities (AAU), Prof. Bakri Osman Saeed under the chairmanship of Engr. Alex Ogedegbe, President, Nigeria Academy of Engineering while the Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire is expected to be the special guest of honour.
The convocation lecture which is expected to be via zoom is part of the series of activities lined up for the 3rd convocation ceremony of the University.
According to VC, the university would be awarding honorary doctorate degree (honoris causa) on Mr. Asue Ighodalo and Barr. Mike Ozekhome (SAN) in recognition of the awardees’ illustrious careers and wonderful contributions to the development of our dear country.
Prof. Aluyor further disclosed that a total of 142 undergraduate and postgraduate students found worthy in character and learning will be awarded the Edo State University Uzairue degree in their various disciplines.
