The Nigeria Police Force, River State Command has declared one Ganiyu Promise wanted for alleged gay practice and cultism offences.
The State Police Command in a statement endorsed its Public Relations Officer, DSP Akan Ezimo, said the suspect was wanted by the police for his alleged involvement in the practice of homosexuality and series of deadly secret cult clashes which led to the death of several persons in the state.
The police statement made available to media men in Port-Harcourt, capital of River State, penultimate week claimed that the suspect was fingered by other cultists and his alleged man lover who are now cooling their heels at the police cells.
“Following the incessant clashes among the various secret cult members in the state, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) gave the Bayelsa Command of the Nigeria Police Force a direct order to apprehend the criminals by any means lawfully available.
“Happily, working hand in hand with the crack team from the Force Headquarters in Abuja, the police were able to arrest over 50 suspects belonging to different cult groups, particularly the Back Axe, Aro Mate, Eiye, Brotherhood, invincible, amongst others.
“In the process of interrogation, some suspect, belonging to the Aro mate, including the one that claimed to be his lover (name withheld) confessed that Ganiyu Promise was one of them.
“For over a year now, the police have not been able to arrest the fleing suspect to enable us (police) prosecute him alongside others, hence the decision to declare him wanted.
“We have published his photograph in the media and we use this opportunity to call on the members of the public to report to the nearest police station if Ganiyu Promise is sighted anywhere in the country,” the statement added.
But expatiating on the issue, the police PRO further told our Crime Correspondent that “the police believes that the runaway young man has committed two major criminal offences and must be brought to justice.
“You know that our laws are against same sex marriage, whether you call it gay or homosexual, they are against the law and the government is fighting seriously against it because the government does not want it to spread among her citizens.
“Therefore, all those caught indulging in it must be brought to justice and it is 14 years imprisonment for such convicted offenders. So, our runaway suspect must face the music. He must not be allowed to be walking free so as not to pollute other innocent Nigerians.
“The police is highly determined to flush him and his cohorts out of their hiding places, sooner than later because the practice of gay is not accepted in Nigeria.
“Unfortunately for the suspect, the police have gathered a lot of intelligence on him. We (police) are aware that he is from Port-Harcourt in River State and that two members of his family were killed by rival cult gangs who want to settle scores with him.
“The police have launched a man hunt for his arrest. He can only hide but he cannot run for a long time because it is better we arrest him to face the law. But alternatively, if he allows members of the cult gangs he had offended to get to him first before the police, then he will get jungle justice,” the police image maker warned.
The Reliance investigation further revealed that on December 15, 2015, the warring cult groups held residents Port-Harcourt City hostage when the rampaging cultists killed lots of people.
The cultists have a trade mark of robbing, raping and killing, thereby making the oil city unsafe until police woke up from their slumbering and made the city hot for criminals.
Unfortunately, over one year after, the police are yet to fish out the fleeing cultists, particularly Ganiyu Promise whose last known address is 39, Nwanchukwu Street, Off Diope Road, Mill Two, Port-Harcourt, River State.
Will last week’s declaration of the suspect as a wanted person by the police speed up the process of apprehending him? Only time will tell.
